I still keep in mind the first time I enjoyed a marathon and stood by the finish line enjoying the runners are available in after running 26.2 miles. I was in awe at the strength & power many of them had being available in to the finish after running the distance. But I also keep in mind a few sorry looking souls running in using the souvenir marathon t-shirt stained with blood from their nipples to their waist band. I don't know about you, but I don't want my finish-line picture to show me bleeding from the nipples!

Now the topic of nipple chafing is mostly a men's problem, since a lot of ladies run with a sports bra that offers sufficient security against this agonizing injury. And it normally doesn't turn up on short runs. I always take safety measures when running greater than an hour.

If you don't want to suffer chafed or bleeding nipples, right here are some ideas (pardon the pun):.

Idea # 1 - Eliminate the Cotton.

A lot of runners know that cotton is not a friendly running material. It absorbs moisture (aka sweat) and becomes quite abrasive and irritating when wet. Moisture management materials - such as coolmax - wick moisture away from the skin and don't become as abrasive as cotton when wet. Keep your cotton wear for after the run, when you need some warmup clothes and get into moisture management materials for running.

Idea # 2 - Lubricate.

There are a number of lubes - one popular with runners is BodyGlide - that go on the skin and assistance to prevent chafing. This one is available in a stick type like an antiperspirant and is easy to apply. Some runners advocate great old fashioned vaseline. Lubes work by letting the material slide over the skin and also offer a bit of a barrier against abrasion. Know that these body lubes will tend to wear off gradually and might need to be reapplied after an hour or so. So - if you decide to utilize a lube on a long run - you might need to lug it with you so you can keep ahead of your sweat!

Idea # 3 - Physical Barriers.

In addition to using only moisture management materials when running, I decide to use a physical barrier against abrasion on my long runs. There are a number of solutions and each runner seems to have their own preference. Numerous select bandaids. Just taping a bandaid over the nipple offers an economical solution securing the nipple and they are easily applied and eliminated. I have found - nevertheless - that some bandaids don't adhere well on a long run when there is a lot of perspiration involved. Medical tape - such as 3M's Transpore tape - also works well and does normally stick well in spite of perspiration. Now there is a drawback to taping: if you have a hairy chest, you will undoubtedly pull hair each time you eliminate the tape. Ouch!

There is another physical barrier that secures the nipples without a lot of adhesive. It is called the NipGuard.
