A recent study published in the Journal for Complementary Therapies in Clinic Practice, suggests that Traditional Chinese Medicine may be able to help those who suffer from stress and their secondary stress related symptoms. The study, principally investigated at South Bank University, London took a group of 18 participants with high self-reported stress levels and randomized them into 3 groups. The groups were a treatment group that received acupuncture, an 'attention only' group which simply received a consultation from the practitioner and finally a waiting list control group.
Participants were given 5 weeks of treatment with Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, each session lasting 45 minutes. The participants answered questionnaires relating to stress before and after the 5 week treatment period and results were then analysed to determine if there was a difference between pre and post testing and indeed between the groups.
What the researchers found was that those in the treatment group had the best reduction in stress and secondary stress related symptoms, whilst those in the waiting list control saw little or no improvement. This study was very small having only used 18 participants however this was just a pilot and the authors will hopefully be able to increase their participant group size and give more results.
